Biography
With almost 30 years experience, Emma has found that forming alliances with individuals results in a shared goal. Emma enjoys learning from persons with special health care needs to find solutions. She holds a Graduate Certificate in Health Sciences (Developmental disability) USyd, where she undertook additional study in autism spectrum disorders and mental health.
Emma co-ordinated the largest dental restorative general anaesthetic waiting list for adults with special health care needs in NSW from 2000-11, liaising with anaesthetists and other medical disciplines. She was privileged to be part of the only Oral Motor Function Therapy (saliva control and feeding issues for children) and Rett syndrome multi-disciplinary management teams in NSW, for 7 years.
Emma assisted in the establishment of co-ordinated dietitian and oral therapist visits to reduce travel time for individuals with special health care needs during her appointment as Staff Specialist at Sydney Dental Hospital from 2012 to 2015.
Emma is currently a research affiliate with University of Sydney for providing mobile dentistry to long-term residential care facilities. Emma is the principal author of a prospective study using pre-set criteria, in the Journal of Disability and Oral Health (2008). She won best clinical research paper (for a person under 36) about the pilot study on treatment planning for persons with special health care needs (2002). Emma co-authored a chapter on Special Needs Dentistry in the Manual of Dental Assisting (2007 edition).
